weekend edition

Saturday night turned into a really fun night with Rhoda, Ally, and Hope (co-workers). They came over for a chili supper. We had fun eating Western food together. Rhoda's from Canada. Her grandparents are from Hong Kong so she blends right in here but she's definitely North American. Ally and Hope are Chinese. I guess they're all in their 20s. They all love Madeleine so it was fun for everybody.

We sat in the living room to eat because we have the smallest dinning room table ever made. Maddie sat in her highchair in the living room with us so that we could all eat without her grabbing everyone's dishes. Along with the chili we had a big salad with ranch and Italian dressing. The dressings were made from those nifty spice packets from the States (thank you, Colemans). Rhoda, especially liked having a salad with ranch dressing. Salads are just not that common here. And if you do get a salad it's not anything like what you'd expect when you hear "salad". It'll probably be a lettuce leaf, a cucumber slice, and literal salad dressing - like Miracle Whip or Mayo. I know some people like that sort of thing, but I do not. So anyway, it was good food.

After Maddie had her bath and went to sleep the girls laid on the bed and watched "The Princess Bride" while Phil cleaned dishes. He watched the 2nd half with us. We made him sit in a chair beside the bed.

Today's been good. Mandy went to fellowship with us. One of my students, Lucy, came up to us at the start of the service and asked to watch Madeleine for us. She kept her entertained with Sunday School, cookies, cake and apples for 2 hours. Lucy's expecting a baby next year so I guess it was good practice. Phil and Maddie went home afterwards and Mandy and I went to lunch. We ended up at KFC which was good and one of Mandy's favorites. Mandy and I had really good conversations. I'm really happy to see our friendship deepening.

Phil, Maddie and I went for a walk this evening and then had our usual delivery Chinese dinner. Phil and I just finished watching the latest episode of The Office that we downloaded from ITunes. We download the episodes each week. It's so worth the money.

Fickle ol' solidarity

At some point in March when this virus deemed that it had spread so far that it could be called a pandemic, I told the girls they should do video journals to remember the days of living in a pandemic. Here now in the middle of April, I realize that I need to write for myself and the girls can just have lots of regret when they're older because they didn't do what I said. When the whole world started moving to stay-at-home orders, I felt such a strong sense of solidarity.  I looked at all of us (literally all of us - okay, most of us) in our different areas of the world facing this beast together.  Jimmy Fallon's wife filmed him hosting from home.  John Krasinski started SGN in his home office.  Everyone was joking about toilet paper, sweatpants, and cutting your own bangs. Italians were singing from their balconies.  Wuhan folk were singing from their high-rises.  Hospitals in NYC were being surrounded by patrol cars each evening with lights flashing and ...

All these posts

Somewhere in space are all these posts that people write.  I've had this blog for years now and I hardly ever use it but it's still always here.  Who is that person that finally says, "Okay, enough is enough. Your blog is gone."? I'm tired.  It's Saturday afternoon at 4pm.  I'd like to nap longer or watch a movie.  I don't want to play chu chu train and I don't want to take a slow toddler paced walk outside.  I don't want to start making pizza but I should, which means I need to go buy tomato paste, make the sauce and make the crust.  I'm feeling lazy and a hard thing with being a parent is that when you're lazy, others in your life have the potential to starve. We're looking at buying a house.  It's not an easy thing to do when the house is on one side of the globe while you're on the other.  When I want to get something done, I want it done now.  So, that's making this process hard.  We're at the mercy of east...
